Although most studies on pollutant biodegradation (especially those of a quantitative nature) have focused on pure cultures, biodegradation in natural environments is carried out by microbial consortia (mixed microbial populations that interact). Furthermore, it has been argued that consortia can have a wider substrate range and higher activity levels than pure cultures [1]; thus, consortia are of interest where bioremediation is concerned.
