In recent years considerable interest has developed in the surface alloying of materials using lasers to modify and improve their surface properties. The recent review by Draper (1985) (1) includes reference to work with pulsed solid-state lasers and with multi-kilowatt, continuous-wave (cw) lasers. Using the latter, much work is reported on alloying ferrous-based materials with Cr, Ni and Mo, often to high concentrations.
