A Letter to the Editor, submitted by Prof. Reinout Heijungs, appears in this issue. In the letter, he outlines his objections to the approach followed by Seto et al. (2017) in their analysis of five software packages for life cycle assessment (LCA). Prof. Heijungs is a lifelong academician with many years of LCA research experience; he is well-known in the LCA community and continues to be involved in the maintenance of the CMLCA software at Leiden University’s Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML). Calling on his years of experience, he raises some interesting points (i.e., criticisms) regarding the Seto et al. (2017) paper, which I hope you, the reader, will reflect on to form your own opinion. To give some context to Prof. Heijung’s perspective, I want to add a little background on how the editors’ view of the nature of the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment has evolved over the years. …
