Zusammenfassung

Viele religiöse Akteure mit universalem Anspruch sind in der sich formierenden postsäkularen Weltgesellschaft anzutreffen. Einer von ihnen ragt heraus: dieser Akteur repräsentiert 1,2 Mrd. Menschen, ist seit gut 1500 Jahren weltpolitisch aktiv, hat sich in den modernen internationalen Beziehungen einen diplomatischen Sonderstatus – Person als Völkerrechtssubjekt – erarbeitet, der ihm als einzigem religiösen Akteur einen Beobachterstatus bei den Vereinten Nationen und volle diplomatische Beziehungen mit fast allen Staaten der Erde einbrachte; darüber hinaus positioniert er sich in den normativen Debatten der Globalisierung pointiert, leitet eine Weltmarke und besitzt auch noch einen, zugegeben sehr kleinen, Staat: Die Rede ist vom Heiligen Stuhl.
