This chapter is based on the findings of the Links Between Population and Environment research programme, financed by the UK’s Overseas Development Administration (ODA, now known as DfiD); the views expressed, however, are those of the author. It is hoped that these general investigations of the relationship between population and environment will be relevant to protected areas. The geographical areas and the general issues raised and covered by the research projects are discussed. This provides the basis for identifying the issues of greatest concern for this book, which are then analysed in more detail.
