Both active and passive repair times are influenced by factors other than equipment design. Consideration of maintenance procedures, personnel, and spares provisioning is known as Maintenance Philosophy and plays an important part in determining overall availability. The costs involved in these activities are considerable and it is therefore important to strike a balance between over and underemphasising each factor. They can be grouped under six headings: Organisation of maintenance resources.Tools and Test Equipment.Personnel — selection, training and motivation.Maintenance instructions and manuals.Spares provisioning.Logistics.
