This chapter reviews aspects of organisation, management and performance in health care with particular reference to the NHS in England. It addresses issues of knowledge and learning in respect of communities of academics and practitioners who are either health managers or medical doctors. The question which forms the subtitle of the chapter, ‘what do we know and how can we learn?’, will be applied to researchers, health managers and doctors.1
