Manufacturing of Ti6Al4V alloy part reinforced by silicon carbide fibers by laser powder bed fusion with following hot isostatic pressing

Abstract

In this work, the hybrid approach combining the laser powder bed fusion and encapsulated hot isostatic pressing was applied for the elaboration of composite part consisting of titanium alloy matrix reinforced by silicon carbide fibers. The feasibility of the proposed approach was experimentally confirmed. The fiber-reinforced titanium alloy parts with a volume fraction of fibers equal to 17% were successfully manufactured. X-ray tomography revealed the absence of defects in obtained part and good contact between the matrix and the fibers. EBSD analysis revealed that fibers’ presence did not influence the orientation of grains in the titanium matrix. The three-point flexural tests revealed that the composite part had significantly higher yield strength than the part produced from bulk titanium alloy.
