Since luminance, among the photometric quantities, is the only one that can be perceived as such by the eye, only luminance can be measured directly by comparison with another luminance. We shall term this method the direct visual measurement of luminance, in contrast with the indirect methods in which luminance is measured with the aid of another quantity.
