Without countermeasures, the increasing use of methane as a fuel in four-stroke gas engines operating on the Otto cycle could substantially increase the amount of a potent greenhouse gas reaching the atmosphere. A team from the University of Rostock has investigated the potential for methane slip reduction by locating the catalytic converter ahead of the turbocharger turbine, where exhaust temperatures and pressures are close to their highest.
