I began reading Milton Himmelfarb’s essays regularly in the mid 1950s. In 1976, as a new employee of The American Jewish Committee, working in Cleveland, I met him in New York and was captivated by his conversational brilliance and his biting, sometimes sardonic, humor. When we met for the first time, I said that I considered him one of my rabbonim (teachers).
