This paper presents a new approach to the modelling and analysis of the multiple token ring. The application of diffusion approximation allows the calculation of mean value and p percentile of the number of packets waiting for transmission. Since it provides good results for heavy traffic, diffusion approximation may help the network designer in buffer dimensioning. A sensitivity analysis shows that the impact of the variation coefficient of packet length may be ignored. However, the assumption of Poisson arrivals which is often used in network analysis has far-reaching consequences.
