Abstract

This article proposes the development of a novel structure based on the cascading of two asymmetrical micro-optical ring resonators (AMORRs) and evaluates its performance as an optical filter. Two AMORR structures, having a single input with three output buses (1 × 3) and a dual input with double output buses (2 × 2), have been designed with four asymmetrical rings and cascaded in such a way as to configure the (2 × 6) buses. The proposed structures are modelled in the Z-domain using the delay line approach. Frequency response studies of the proposed structures are performed in MATLAB. FSR (free spectral range) and crosstalk are successfully computed from the frequency response of the proposed AMORRs. The proposed AMORRs are then designed in OptiFDTD using the parameters of the Z-domain transfer function. The frequency response of designed AMORRs is computed in OptiFDTD software and compared with that obtained in MATLAB. The FSR computed from both characteristics is very close. The field distribution of the designed AMORR has been presented in the article. The optimum coupling coefficients obtained in MATLAB are used to design directional optical couplers. OptiSystem software (version 20.0) is used to develop the optical model and assess the system's performance in optical communication. A high Q-factor (> 29) is obtained at each bus with a lower BER (Bit Error Rate) value, giving a wide-open eye diagram. These analyses show that the proposed structures have a large FSR with negligible crosstalk and a high Q-factor with wide-open eye diagrams, providing noise-free systems to accommodate several communication channels.
