Neely (1980) advised that model building should incorporate both William of Ockam’s ‘Principle of Parsimony’, which stated that ‘one should not multiply causes without reason’, and Bayesian philosophy. The use of Bayes’ theorem allows for personal judgements about the relative merits of various alternative mechanisms in the model building process. Thus, whatever prior information is available should be used (Reilly, 1970).
