It happened several times that while explaining my profession, I’ve been asked whether I actually make microprocessors for computing. Not at all, my background is design of analog integrated circuits. There is the entire world of integrated electronics behind it. Also, digital circuits have much broader usage than microprocessor components. Often these two domains coexist under mixed-signal circuit solutions. However, “microprocessors” seem to be the main association with the words “integrated circuits”. This isn’t that surprising as the general press mostly mentions microelectronics in the context of new scaling achievements in silicon-based CMOS technologies. Currently, we observe the market introducing 3 nm CMOS technology node circuits with over 100 billion transistors on a single chip.
