This paper examines one aspect of automobile manufacturing, sheet metal joining, and endorses techniques that minimize environmental impact and cost while meeting performance standards. A methodology has been developed for evaluating kinematically constrained joining techniques based on two parameters: environmental impact and cost. The model evaluates three techniques: welding, adhesion, and riveting, that meet the same performance standards necessary for automobile manufacturing. A life-cycle assessment (LCA) model and life-cycle cost assessment (LCCA) model evaluated environmental impacts and cost, respectively, based on energy consumption and material inflows and outflows. These results were placed in a multi-objective decision making algorithm to determine the most suitable techniques for applications in automobiles.
