Multidirectional Forging of High-Leaded Tin Bronze: Evaluation of Corrosion Behavior in Aqueous NaCl Solution

Abstract

The corrosion behavior of high-leaded tin bronze was studied after multidirectional forging (MDF). The corrosion behavior was examined through electrochemical polarization test and constant immersion test at room temperature in 3.5% NaCl solution. The mechanism of corrosion and morphology of the corroded surfaces were characterized through field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) equipped with EDX facility. The corrosion products formed in the alloy surface were identified by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique. The corrosion resistance of high-leaded tin bronze was decreased after MDF. The factors influenced the corrosion resistance of the alloy were (a) formation of passive layer, (b) increased dislocation density with decreased crystalline size during MDF, (c) dissolution of copper, and (d) change in texture during MDF.
