10. Nanoindentation Test Standards

Abstract

The ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) has recently issued a draft international standard ISO 14577 entitled “Metallic materials—Instrumented indentation test for hardness and materials parameters [1].” This draft standard covers depth-sensing indentation testing for indentations in the macro, micro and nano depth ranges and also covers the testing of coated material systems.
The ISO is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies. Preparation of international standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Member bodies interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established have the right to be represented on that committee.

The original Berkovich indenter has a face angle of 65.033° to give the same actual surface area to depth ratio as a Vickers indenter. The modified Berkovich indenter has a face angle of 65.27° to give the same projected area to depth ratio as a Vickers indenter.

Note, the terminology used in the draft standard is slightly different from that used elsewhere in this book. In particular, the geometry correction factor ε given above should not be confused with the geometry correction factor β described in Chap. 3.
