The fuel has a significant influence on the pre-ignition tendency of the engine. The established characteristic numbers RON and MON can only represent the resistance to knocking well. The pre-ignition behavior is not satisfactorily reproduced. Therefore, there are efforts in the automotive industry to establish a test method with the least possible expenditure of time and fuel. The Institute for Powertrains and Automotive Technology at the Vienna Technical University and Volkswagen have developed a test setup and a test method, verified it with a broad fuel matrix and demonstrated some mechanisms of action. A reliable test procedure has been established. …
