Abstract

Results are presented from potentiodynamic studies of the electroextraction of copper from nitrate solutions. The results yield new information on the effect of the composition of the electrolyte, current density, and the temperature of the process on the cathodic polarization of copper. The optimum values are found for the parameters and indices that characterize the electroextraction of copper from sulfate-nitrate solutions obtained in the nitric-acid leaching of a polymetallic sulfide-based material. It is shown that an increase in the concentration of nitric acid in the electrolyte does not significantly affect the indices of the process. Performing the electrolysis operation in several stages made it possible to bring the yield of copper up to 99.76% and thus remove almost all of it from the solution.

Footnotes
1
Previous studies have shown that an excessively high scan rate makes it impossible to clearly identify the potential corresponding to the beginning of release of hydrogen in model solutions of the type being studied here. This is the reason that the above-indicated range of variation was chosen.

2
This range was chosen for the concentration of free nitric acid based on the results of studies of the nitric acid leaching of a multi-component sulfide-based raw material [36]. The results showed that under certain conditions the concentration of nitrate ions in the leaching solution can be decreased to 5–10 g/dm3, which makes it possible to minimize its effect on subsequent stages of the solutions’ processing.
