Parametric Optimization of Hole Quality in Laser Drilling Kevlar/Basalt Hybrid FRP Composite

Abstract

In this article, authors have been employed a pulsed Nd:YAG laser system for drilling of 1.2 mm thick Kevlar-29 and Basalt fiber-based hybrid fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite sheet. To perform the experiments, Taguchi-based L9 orthogonal array has been used. Lamp current (I), pulse frequency (f), and air pressure (p) are considered as variable input drilling parameters while the quality of the hole has been evaluated in terms of hole circularity. Thereafter, Taguchi Method has been applied to identify the optimum settings of laser drilling parameters to improve the hole quality. Results of this study indicate that the lamp current significantly affects on hole circularity.
