Mercedes-Benz U. S. International has broken ground for the new battery factory in Bibb County in the US state Alabama. Daimler will produce batteries for its future electric SUVs belonging to the product and technology brand EQ. Together with the new Consolidation Center, the factory lies only approximately 11 km from the Mercedes-Benz car plant in Tuscaloosa. The factory will include also a logistics center consisting of three main areas: prep areas for body and assembly parts and stores for empty containers. Commissioning is scheduled for 2019. The company is investing a total of one billion US dollars (around 870 million euros) in the production of the EQ models; it is expected that over 600 new jobs will be created in Alabama. The global battery production network will consist of eight factories in the future.
