In particular in mathematics and natural sciences, the use of supercomputers has made possible the treatment of formerly completely intractable problems. It also provides the possibility of analyzing complex systems by the aid of simulation. This procedure is now becoming as important as theoretical investigations and closely interacts with the latter.
