This book was written while heading the department Document Imaging at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics in Darmstadt/Germany. It developed under the pressure that introducing new personnel to the field is a rather time-consuming task. Most co-workers coming from the university had good background in one of the related areas; however, the communication across the fields always was difficult. The author expects that this task can be significantly simplified by using this book.
