This special issue of the International Journal of Mechanics and Materials in Design (MAMD) is based on works presented at the 19th Annual Rio Grande Symposium on Advanced Materials (RGSAM) which was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on October 9, 2007. This annual conference is held in the Rio Grande region of the United States’ southwest. Although its participants are mostly from this region, a region that is rich in research production with its national labs (Sandia and Los Alamos) and research-intensive universities, it often attracts participants from other parts of the US and the world.
