Abstract

Optical ceramic has been obtained from ytterbium-doped lutecium oxide by spark plasma sintering. Yb3+:L2O3 nanopowder synthesized by means of laser ablation was used as the initial material. Spark plasma sintering of nanoparticles at temperature 1450°C and load 15 kN with holding time 40 min gives submicron crystalline structure of ceramic with average grain size 0.2 μm and optical transmission coefficient 75.6% at wavelength λ = 1080 nm, which is 5.8% less than the theoretical value.
