Abstract

The present study deals with desorption of methylene blue (MB) using cost-effective eco-friendly bentonite coating (Paintosorp™) and its regeneration potential. Batch experiments were performed to determine the effect of different solvents and their volumes for removal of MB from spent/exhausted adsorbent. Among different solvents, ethanol shows optimal dye desorption efficiency, which simultaneously increases with increasing volume of ethanol and temperature of dye solution. The adsorption/desorption isotherms models (Freundlich, Langmuir, Redlich) were determined by varying initial dye concentrations (50–200 ppm). Kinetic models were investigated using pseudo-first-order (R2 = 0.804) and pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.997), which reveals better fit for pseudo-second-order kinetics. Regeneration study results confirm successive adsorption/desorption cycles of Paintosorp™, which can be effectively used for the removal of MB from wastewater even after five regenerative cycles.
