Silicon is considered to be a promising material for increased battery output. However, this semiconductor is not mechanically stable enough for it to be used in electric cars. Now, Kiel University (CAU) and Rena Technologies GmbH want to apply a new approach in order to make silicon batteries ready for the market. In their project “Development and characterisation of large surface area, porous SI film anodes for lithium-sulphur-silicon batteries”, the material scientists at Kiel University are combining their research findings on porous silicon anodes with their experience in solar technology. Their aim over the next three years is not only to develop a high-performance silicon battery but also, in cooperation with plant manufacturers, to create a concept to produce them industrially on a large scale. …
