Excerpt

The engineer Matthias Hofmann from the Institute of Mechanical Handling and Logistics (IFT) at the University of Stuttgart has designed an Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) that allows a car to be assembled on a flexible platform which does not require permanent production facilities. Assembly workers travel on this self-driving platform and can build a complete passenger car there. TLB GmbH is helping the University of Stuttgart to commercialize this technology. The AGV will travel autonomously to the different stations required at each stage of the PRODUCTION PROCESS. As the car that is being assembled can also be pivoted and tipped on the self-driving platform, this allows the entire assembly process to take place on the AGV.
