This chapter describes the methods of a study1 of grain markets in Bangladesh, which set out to shed light on three concerns: iThe character of exchange relations: how the terms and conditions of exchange vary amongst the main agrarian classes;iiUneven commoditisation: the implications of uneven and changing levels of commercialisation for growth, vulnerability and equity; andiiiLiberalisation: the implications of grain market liberalisation (undertaken during the 1970s and 1980s) for the operation of markets.
