Abstract

The chapter focuses on the application of saw-cut joints (SCJ) to mitigate low temperature cracks (LTC) in asphalt pavement, a significant issue in Mongolia's harsh climate. It details the severe weather conditions and the extensive road network in Mongolia, highlighting the prevalence of LTC. The study presents a collaborative project between Mongolia's Ministry of Road and Transport Development and JICA, involving the construction of test pavements with varying structures and mixtures. The results of follow-up surveys reveal that SCJ effectively controls the frequency and location of LTC, with narrower SCJ spaces resulting in fewer cracks. Additionally, the chapter discusses interesting transverse cracks observed at shoulders, which are also influenced by temperature changes. The findings indicate that SCJ could be a cost-effective solution for managing LTC, with potential economic benefits. The chapter concludes with recommendations for further research and the need for comprehensive cost analysis to optimize SCJ space in new pavements.
