Set theory, founded by Georg Cantor in the second half of the 19th cen¬tury, has profoundly transformed mathematics. Modern day mathematics is unthinkable without the concept of a set, or as David Hilbert put it: “Nobody will drive us from the paradise (of set theory) that Cantor has created for us.”
