Zusammenfassung

„Social Media“, verstanden als Anwendungen auf der Basis digitaler, vernetzter und prinzipiell allgemein zugänglicher Technologien, die sozial genutzt werden, um Inhalte unterschiedlicher Art zu kreieren, zu modifizieren oder auszutauschen, sind heute aus kaum einem Lebensbereich wegzudenken. Durch die charakteristischen Netzwerk- und viralen Effekte haben sie sich räumlich und zeitlich mit ungekannter Dynamik verbreitet. Social Media haben dabei nicht nur das Repertoire von Medienangeboten bereichert, sondern ganz generell die Optionen der sozialen Interaktion erweitert, Strukturen der Wertschöpfung verändert und neue Geschäftsmodelle ermöglicht. Die Betreiber dieser Plattformen wurden so über die Medienwirtschaft hinaus zu bedeutenden ökonomischen und politischen Akteuren.
