This is the second of the two chapters which make up Part A and a taxonomy of the chapter position within the structure of the book is provided in Figure 2.1. This chapter will provide a description of the fundamentals of stereo vision by reviewing area, transform, symbolic feature, hybrid, phase, relaxation, dynamic programming and object space-based techniques. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the constraints which exist within current matching methodologies and how they may be overcome.
