Abstract

This document aims at bridging productivity measurement and weak sustainability in a specific data envelopment analysis framework that allows for negative output. In this framework countries use two inputs: capital and labour and seeks to maximize output and adjusted net saving. Adjustment net saving is seen as a sustainability indicator and then the productivity indicator computed can be understood as a sustainability productivity index. The higher the indicator is the higher productivity is and the probability of targeting sustainability.

Incidentally, Ayong Le Kama (2001), recalls that the pioneer of optimal growth theory, Ramsey (1928), held that “discount later enjoyments in comparison with earlier ones [is] a practice which is ethically indefensible and arises merely from the weakness of imagination”.

It is not argued here that it is the best set of exogenous variables many other contextual variables could have been added but it is not the purpose of this work to find any kind of “optimal set”.
