Abstract

This essay imagines a working complementarity between religion and medicine, based on a discussion of two images: Marc Chagall’s depiction of Jacob being blessed by an angel and a photo of an intensive care unit. The question is whether medicine necessarily disenchants, in Weber’s sense. I argue there are other ways to understand the multiple agencies at work in the ICU photo.
