The San Bartolo copper deposit is situated in the gorge of the Río Grande, some 20 km north of San Pedro de Atacama, at the northern margin of the Salar de Atacama. This large, internal drainage basin forms a topographic low between the Cordillera de Domeyko to the west and the High Andes to the east (Fig. 1).
