Its basic aspect is the continuously deteriorating water quality in Lake Ladoga and the entire system of the Lake Ladoga, the Neva River, the Neva Mouth and the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland. This deterioration is a consequence of human economic activity in the lake’s basin (Voropayeva and Rumyantsev 1991).
