An important question of developmental biology is, whether the parts of an individual pass through a given sequence of states independently from one another, so that the coordination of different developmental processes depends only on a time correlation or whether the development of one part is influenced by transportable agents (e.g. inductors, growth promotors, gene products, hormones) or morphological relations (e.g. cell contact, innervation). As this special problem can arise in different forms, one will be considered as example for the whole group.
