Thomas writes: “Culture is a universal orientation system very typical for a society, organization and group […]. This orientation system is formed from specific symbols and passed on in the respective society, etc. It influences the perception, thinking, values and actions of all its members and thus defines their membership of society. Culture as an orientation system structures a specific field of action for the individuals who feel they belong to society and thus creates the prerequisite for the development of independent forms of environmental management” (Thomas 1996, p. 112).

2
The cultural dimensions that describe this behavior on the basis of defined categories (e.g., power distance (cf. Hofstede 1991) or communication speed (cf. Hall 1959)) also fit in with this working definition. (see Sect. 2.1.4).

3
The cultural similarities can vary considerably here—e.g., depending on the size of the nation and the multitude of ethnic groups in the nation.

6
Scientists, theologians, and philosophers think in concepts. They create concepts on the basis of theories and postulates. This way of thinking is very widespread in the West (e.g., America, Europe). Mystics and possibly inventors acquire their knowledge more intuitively, from inner experience or visions. Such intuitive thought patterns based on psychic experience are used in India, for example. Concretely relational ways of thinking, which grasp reality as active emotional relations in concrete situations, are rather practiced by artists and actors. Similar thought patterns are found in China.

7
Further recommendations for action and information on Chinese project and process understanding can be found, for example, in Lewis (2000) and are conveyed in special IUID seminars (cf. e.g., www.iuic.de).
