Abstract

The chapter presents a comprehensive approach to designing and developing a gamified task management web application, Guildhouses of Taskosmos, aimed at enhancing student engagement and motivation in online learning. It begins by contextualizing the need for such an application in the wake of COVID-19, highlighting the challenges students face with online learning, such as lack of motivation and procrastination. The authors draw on existing frameworks by Marczewski and Chou to create a balanced system that caters to different user types and core drives. The application, integrated with Moodle LMS, features quests, rewards, and customization options designed to motivate students through game mechanics. The chapter also discusses the potential for adaptive learning features based on user data, suggesting ways to personalize the application for better engagement and retention. The prototype's implementation and future research directions are outlined, emphasizing the potential impact on student engagement and the broader implications for educational technology.
