Abstract

In order to incorporate the presence of tidal turbines, numerical models must implement the proper thrust produced by the turbines to ensure that correct amounts of momentum and energy are removed [5]. Several models (e.g. TELEMAC, MIKE 21, ROMS and FVCOM) incorporate the thrust due to arrays of turbines at regional scale, informed by properties determined from turbine-scale models, in terms of an equivalent drag term. For depth-averaged models, this equates to enhanced bed roughness [5].
