The theme of this chapter is the method of changing the mathematical model of a problem from a differential equation into a variational form. The ability to make the change is probably not a skill which will be often called upon, but the results which have previously had to be taken on trust will be justified. In addition, an understanding of the process will give a deeper appreciation of the finite element method.
