Zusammenfassung

Dieses Kapitel bietet einen knappen Überblick über das Forschungsfeld der Vergleichenden Regionalismusforschung (VRF). Eingangs bestimmen wir das Forschungsfeld durch seinen empirischen Gegenstandsbereich – den Regionalismus – sowie die Methode des Vergleichs und verorten es zwischen der Disziplin der Internationalen Beziehungen und den Regionalstudien (area studies). Anschließend stellen wir anhand ausgewählter Studien die wichtigsten Forschungsergebnisse zu zwei zentralen Fragestellungen vor. Erstens, welche Faktoren beeinflussen die Entstehung und Entwicklung von Regionalismus? Zweitens, welche Auswirkungen hat Regionalismus auf Wohlfahrt, Frieden und Sicherheit sowie nationale politische Systeme? Insgesamt argumentieren wir, dass sich die VRF in einem Spannungsfeld bewegt zwischen der Erklärung von Unterschieden und von Gemeinsamkeiten verschiedener Formen des Regionalismus.
