Abstract

Acid and ammonia leaching was carried out on old froth flotation copper tailings from the Copperbelt Province in Zambia. The following parameters were studied: type of acid, leaching time, residence time, pulp density, and temperature. Over 80% of Cu was extracted during leaching with sulphuric and hydrochloric acid. On the other hand, leach efficiency for manganese was around 70%. By comparison, sulphuric acid yielded a slight higher leach efficiency for copper and manganese than hydrochloric acid. Leaching time and temperature had a little influence on the recovery of copper under acidic leaching. By comparison, leach efficiency of manganese was more dependent on the time than copper. The optimum time was four hours for ammonia leaching. Analysis of the leach solution with ICP-OES showed that ammonia leaching was more selective for copper than manganese.
