This book is a study of the meaning of modal expressions and their connections with argumentation. Modal expressions are words like the following: must, can, may, should, ought, possible, impossible, necessary, presumably, and probably. When one of these words is used in a sentence, and the sentence is part of a sequence, they convey a meaning that relates to argumentation. This connection goes both ways: one can speak of the role of modality in argumentation and of the role of argumentation in modality. That is, explicit modal terms give clues to understanding and evaluating arguments that may be relatively implicit; and conversely, explicit argumentation gives clues for the precise meaning of modal expressions that may be themselves relatively implicit. Let us discuss some examples. …
