In diesem Abschnitt werden ausgewählte Anwendungen der Ideen der Behavioral Economics vorgestellt. Behavioral Finance, Sozialpolitik und die Idee des liberalen Paternalismus, der versucht, mit den Ideen der Behavioral Economics das Verhalten der Menschen zu beeinflussen.

Man vereinbart heute den Verkauf dieser Aktie zu einem späteren Termin, wobei der Preis des Verkaufes ebenfalls heute vereinbart wird (beispielsweise 10 €). Sinkt der Preis der Aktie beispielsweise auf 5 €, verdient der Verkäufer daran: Er hat die Aktie heute zu 10 € per Termin verkauft und bekommt am Tag des Verkaufes 10 € für eine Aktie, benötigt aber nur 5 €, um diese zu erwerben.

Bertrand et al. fokussieren sich auf das amerikanische Banken- und Wohlfahrtssystem, so dass diese Ideen für Deutschland nicht immer repräsentativ sind.

Ökonomisch gesprochen entstehen beim Konsum negative externe Effekte, welche die Konsumenten sich selbst zufügen – internalisiert man diese, so steigt die gesamtwirtschaftliche Wohlfahrt.

Solche externen Effekte finden sich beispielsweise beim Umweltschutz: Der Verursacher kippt Müll in den Fluss, hat also den Nutzen geringerer Beseitigungskosten, die Schäden an der Umwelt werden aber der Allgemeinheit aufgebürdet. Also müssen Auflagen, Steuern oder sonstige Regelungen her, die dafür sorgen, dass die Kosten dieser Umweltverschmutzung dem Verursacher angelastet werden.
