Bismuth induced Cu7Te4/Sb2Te3 nanocomposites for higher thermoelectric power factor and carrier properties

Abstract

Thermoelectric (TE) material-based research has attracted more attention due to the conversion of waste heat into useful electricity. Herein, we synthesized Cu7Te4/Sb2Te nanocomposite by solid-state two-step ball milling method and the effect of Bi-doping on the TE properties of nanocomposites has been studied. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that the formation of Cu7Te4/Sb2Te composite and Sb2Te phase is dominant than Cu7Te4 phase. To analyze the chemical state of the elements, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) was performed. The occurrence of phase transformation was confirmed by TG-DTA analysis. The samples were densified into pellets by cold-pressing technique and annealed at 673 K. The phase structure and surface morphology of the pellets were analyzed by XRD and Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA) which suggested that the pellet surface possess inhomogeneous elemental distribution. To evaluate the TE performance, the power factor was calculated by measuring Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity of the samples as a function of temperature. It clearly indicated that, the phase transformation plays a vital role in TE performance.
