Continental shelves are the submarine platforms that surround continents. They are found in the open ocean and in many of the coastal seas. Similar features surround subcontinents, such as Greenland, and many oceanic islands. These features exhibit a wide variety of physical dimensions and characteristic relief. Most commonly, they are relatively flat with slopes varying between 1 : 102 and 1 : 104. Depths at the seaward edges of continental shelves are generally on the order of 80–100 m, although there are places where depths are less than 50 m or greater than 200 m. Beyond the shelf edge is the continental slope, which is typically inclined on the order of 1 : 102 to 1 : 103 and frequently has much more local relief than the continental shelf. …
