Controlled synthesis of SnO2 nanoneedles using one-step template-free hydrothermal method

Abstract

SnO2 single-crystalline nanoneedles that were assembled into different morphologies were successfully synthesized via one-step template-free hydrothermal method, which provided a facile and low cost way for researchers to produce the 1-D (1-dimensionality) SnO2 nanostructures. The size and morphology of the product have been controlled accurately. It was proved that the nanoneedle SnO2 fabricated using hydrothermal method possessed a higher response value of 4.75 to ethanol than reported response value of 2 of SnO2 nanoneedles synthesized by other methods. The fabricated sensor also exhibited an extremely short recovery time of 2 s, which was far shorter than common 8–10 s. Moreover, a possible growth mechanism was further proposed.
